Grade
Grade is a letter from A to E (or X), showing how a given person compares to the other participants of the same project or team, not of the whole organization. It is visible as a colored badge in the Participants table on the Project and Team views, available but not shown by default.
Calculation method
Grade is based on a given person's Daily Calories, for the selected Calories Type. People in the same table are ordered by this value, and the grade boundaries are set by the percentiles of that distribution:
- A: the 85th percentile and above.
- B: the 70th to 85th percentile.
- C: the 50th to 70th percentile.
- D: the 25th to 50th percentile.
- E: below the 25th percentile.
- X: no recorded activity in the selected period, excluded from the comparison.
Because the boundaries are calculated locally, within the table where the grade is shown, the same person can get a different grade on the project view and on the team view, even in the same period, because each time they are compared against a different group of people.
Grade speaks only to position relative to others in the same table, not to an absolute value: a person with an A Grade in a small, weaker project can have lower Daily Calories than a person with a C Grade in a large, strong team. That is why Grade is not suited to comparing people from different projects or teams directly: for that it is better to use the Daily Calories value itself, or other metrics independent of the local context. An X Grade (no activity) means exclusion from the comparison, not the lowest grade, so it should not be read as "worse than E".
A difference between the Grade of the same person on the project view and on the team view is expected and does not mean an error: a person can be at the top of a small team (an A Grade on the Team view), while being in the middle of the pack of the larger project that team belongs to (a C Grade on the Project view). Both grades are true at the same time, because they relate to a different comparison group.
